Introduction

Welcome to Globoil Post, where we bring you the latest highlights in the edible oil and agri-trade news. Today, we have an exclusive interview with Rasheed Janmohammed, Chief Executive of Westbury Group of Companies, Pakistan, and Chairman of Pakistan Edible Oil Refiners Association (PEORA). With over three decades of experience in the edible oil business, Mr. Janmohammed shares his insights on the impact of COVID-19 on Pakistan's edible oil industry and the road ahead.

Pakistan's Response to COVID-19 and Meeting Customer Requirements

COVID-19 brought about unprecedented challenges worldwide, and Pakistan was no exception. With a large population, the country had to strike a balance between combatting the pandemic and addressing economic challenges. During the initial strict lockdown, essential commodity factories, including edible oil refineries, continued to operate following safety standards. While the HORECA industry (Hotels, Catering Business) faced closures, domestic demand for edible oils remained significant. Pakistani citizens, known for their charitable spirit, took the challenge of supporting the vulnerable, leading to increased demand for edible oils. Despite the crisis, there was no reduction in edible oil demand, and the outlook remains positive.

Impact of COVID-19 on Global Edible Oil Markets

The pandemic initially affected global edible oil prices, causing setbacks in demand and supplies. Fear of economic slowdown and falling crude oil prices contributed to corrections in edible oil and oilseed prices. However, the market sentiment improved, leading to a 20% increase in Palm Oil and Soya Oil prices over the last two months. Political support and improving demand for Biodiesel further stabilized Crude Palm Oil prices. Although COVID-19 fears persist, the world is adapting to living with the pandemic, and the edible oil market is showing signs of stability.

Pakistan's Edible Oil and Oilseed Imports in the Next Five Years

Currently, Pakistan imports around 3.00 million tons of Palm Oil and Palm Olein, as well as 2.50 million tons of Oilseeds such as Soybeans and Canola seeds. The total consumption stands at approximately 4.50 million tons, with a per capita consumption of 20kgs. While it is expected that the volume of imports will increase year over year, local production in Pakistan is not improving significantly. The scarcity of fertile land poses challenges to increasing local cultivation of oilseeds. The government's priority has historically been given to Wheat, Rice, Sugarcane, and Cotton seed, impacting the agriculture sector's overall performance. Despite these challenges, with a growing population and better purchasing power, Pakistan's edible oil demand is likely to rise in the future.

Conclusion

Rasheed Janmohammed's insights shed light on the resilience of Pakistan's edible oil industry amid the COVID-19 crisis. The nation successfully navigated challenges while ensuring essential commodity supplies. As global edible oil markets stabilize and adapt to the new normal, Pakistan faces both challenges and opportunities in meeting the growing demand. Despite constraints in local production, the country remains committed to addressing food security and promoting sustainable practices in the edible oil sector.
