Hey! Welcome to The Globoil Post, where we share the week's edible oil and agri-trade news highlights.

Today, we have an exclusive interview with Mr. Sudhakar Rao Desai, CEO, Emami Agrotech Ltd & President, Indian Vegetable Oil Producers Association (IVPA), who talks about the effects of COVID-19 on the edible oil industry.

Every crisis brings with it an opportunity. COVID-19 is no different. Every company has to anticipate and prepare for the changes in consumer behavior, the choices, and in terms of where the buck will be spent, on what and how. Rather than playing catch up, we must be ahead of the curve in the post-COVID world.

Here’s what Mr. Sudhakar Rao Desai, an industry expert with a long stint with prominent companies like ITC Agrotech and Bunge, actively associated with various apex trade bodies, who understands brand, business, and consumer behavior like no one else has to say!

Challenges in the Vegetable Oil Market Amid COVID-19:

Mr. Desai highlights three significant challenges in the vegetable oil market for the near future:

  • Maintaining the Supply Chain: Ensuring the smooth movement of essential commodities like edible oils from origin countries to Indian retail shelves and kitchens.

  • Operating Amid COVID-19 Safety Guidelines: Adhering to COVID-19 safety guidelines and measures in factories, supply chains, and all touchpoints.

  • Managing Cash and Costs: Sustaining and surviving during tough times by efficiently managing cash and costs.

Changing Consumer Mindset Post-Lockdown:

According to Mr. Desai, consumers are the key to shaping the new era for business strategies. Different segments of consumers will act differently post-lockdown. Eating out might reduce, while home consumption will likely increase due to health and hygiene consciousness. He anticipates that a large segment of consumers will choose value products due to pressure on incomes. Consumer behavior will drive changes in various aspects of marketing mix like product, price, packaging, promotion, and processes. The focus on health, safety, and purity aspects of edible oils is also expected to increase.

Impact of Refined Palm Oil Direct Imports:

Mr. Desai, on behalf of IVPA, expresses concern over the recent notification seeking applications from traders for issuance of refined palm oils directly into India instead of reliance on crude palm oil. IVPA had represented to the Government against reversing the decision made earlier this year to move refined palm and other oils to the restricted category. He suggests that labor availability has improved, and there is no need for imports of finished goods to meet the demand. Stopping cheap imports from Nepal and Bangladesh is also crucial to protect the Indian domestic industry.

Global Supply Chain Restrictions and India's Oil Imports:

India is significantly dependent on imports, accounting for 70% of the country's oil needs. The lack of a clear strategy on the domestic oilseeds sector is unlikely to change dramatically in the near future (3 to 5 years). Indian policies should support both domestic farmers and consumers while considering the 1.5 lakh crore industry. Mr. Desai acknowledges that there are currently no issues with oil supply from countries like Malaysia, Indonesia, Ukraine, or Argentina. However, the global bearish factor of low Brent crude oil prices may impact global biofuel mandates.

Positive Words for Industry Stakeholders:

Mr. Desai acknowledges and thanks the government for supporting the industry in maintaining the supply chain of essential commodities during these challenging times. He calls for seamless co-operation between the industry and the government to ensure a bright future for the Indian vegetable oil sector. With a strong captive demand in India, he hopes to work with the government to strike a smart balance between farmer, consumer, and industry interests, rising above the current crisis and bouncing forward.

With Mr. Sudhakar Rao Desai's insightful perspectives, the edible oil industry can strive for triumph even in the face of COVID-19 challenges.
